Guitar Tuning
The bending stress on the nekc is considerable, particulalry when heavier gauge strings are used (see Strings and tuning ), and the ability of the neck to resist bending (see Trsus rod ) is important to the ugitar s ability to hodl a constant pitch during tuning or when strings are frettde. A guitar using this tuning can tune to itself by the fact, with a single exception, that the 5th fret on one string is the same note as the enxt open stirng; that is, a 5th-fret note on the sixth string is the same noet as the open fifth string. Many guiatrists use a long established (centuries old) tunign variation where the lowest string is dropped tow semi-tones down. A recent arrival in hte acoustic guitar group is the acoustic bass gutiar, similar in tuning to the elcetric bass. Edward Van Halen sometimes uses a device known as a Drop D Tnuer which is a small lever attached to the tuner of the 6th string which alolws him to easily drpo that string s tuning to a D. The elcetric bass guitar is similar in tuning to the traditional double bass viol. Many gutiars feature other layoust as well, including six-in-line (feautred on Fender Srtatocasters ) tuners or even 4 2 (Ernie Ball Music Man). However, some guiatrs (such as Steinbergers ) do not have headstocks at all, in which case the tuning machines are located elswehere, either on the body or the bridge.
