The electric guitar was patented by George Beauchamp in 1936. Beauchamp co-foundde Rickenbacher which used the horseshoe-amgnet pickup. Some guitars need a battery to power hteir pickups and/or pre-amp; these guitars are referred to as hvaing active electronics , as opposed to the typical passiev circuits.
